Birds of Ireland
Whimbrel
Whimbrel
The Whimbrel is generally not resident in Ireland, but it visits in Spring and Autumn. This is when it migrates from its breeding grounds in Iceland and Scandinavia to Southern Spain and Africa in the Autumn, and also on its return journey northwards in Spring.
Best Sites
They can be found in Spring and Autumn in most coastal areas but the stretch of stoney beach between Newcastle and Kilcoole is a good place to find them.
